When Nia Sanchez was six-years-old her parents divorced and she had to live in a shelter with her mother. It was a difficult time and Ms. Sanchez, now Miss USA, has not forgotten those days. She joined super-model Tyson Beckford on Tuesday night to co-host the Fashion for Charity Gala, which helped raise funds and increase awareness of domestic violence and human trafficking. “One out of every four women experience domestic violence,” she said. And more than 20 million women are victims of sex trafficking.”When women are given tools they can take their life back and turn it around into something positive,” said Ms. Sanchez. The City Girl Beauty Project, a not-for-profit organization, has taken on a mission to empower young women ages 18 – 30, who are survivors of these horrors. That is the reason this organization, was chosen to receive a portion of the funds from the gala.
CBSNews.com –Walking through the Shibuya section of Tokyo, Ariana Miyamoto certainly turns heads — and she wants to use that attention to change attitudes.
When Miyamoto was crowned Miss Universe Japan in March, selected by a panel of seven Japanese judges, her surprise on stage was real, reports CBS News correspondent Seth Doane. She was the first-ever winner to be biracial. Her father is African-American, and her mother is Japanese.
“At first, I didn’t want to compete,” Miyamoto said in Japanese. “But then a close friend who was also biracial committed suicide. That’s when I decided to do something about the suffering he’d endured.”
She said the friend “really hated being half Japanese and not being fully accepted into Japanese society.”
“Japan still has racial issues, and I wanted to do something about it,” she said.

The Miss Universe Organization will return to the “Capital City” to produce the 2015 MISS USA® Pageant after the tremendous results from last summer. The Miss Universe Organization will bring on IMG as executive producers of this year’s MISS USA pageant. The 2015 MISS USA® Pageant will feature contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Contestants will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview.
